In plain English
Asthma and COPD are long-term lung conditions that make breathing harder — asthma from airways that tighten and inflame, COPD from airways and air sacs damaged over time.
What asthma and COPD actually are
Asthma and COPD are both chronic conditions that affect how well air moves in and out of your lungs, but they're not the same. In asthma, the airways are sensitive and prone to inflammation — they tighten, swell, and produce extra mucus in response to triggers like allergens, smoke, cold air, or exercise, making it hard to breathe in episodes that can come and go. Asthma often starts in childhood but can appear at any age.
COPD — chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema — usually develops later in life and involves more lasting damage to the airways and the tiny air sacs in the lungs, most often from long-term smoking or other exposures. Its breathing trouble tends to be more constant and progressive.
Symptoms and warning signs
The hallmark symptoms overlap: shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and a cough that won't quit. With asthma, symptoms often flare in response to a trigger and then settle, and many people notice it most at night, early morning, or during exercise. With COPD, the breathlessness tends to be steadier and to creep up over time — getting winded doing things that used to feel easy, or catching repeated chest infections that linger.
Because these symptoms can be mistaken for being out of shape, a lingering cold, or simply getting older, they're often brushed off. If you find yourself wheezing, reaching for breath, or coughing for weeks, it's worth getting evaluated — breathing tests can sort out what's going on and point to the right treatment.
How Delphi Health & Wellness manages asthma and COPD
At Delphi Health & Wellness, breathing care starts with getting the diagnosis right. Johanna Delphin, FNP, listens to your history and symptoms, examines you, and arranges the appropriate testing — including breathing tests when needed — to distinguish asthma from COPD or other causes, because the right treatment depends on the right diagnosis.
From there, we build a plan you can actually follow. That usually means the right inhaler or inhalers — and, just as importantly, making sure you know how to use them correctly, since technique makes a real difference.
Because so much of breathing care is review and adjustment, many follow-ups fit a secure telehealth visit from anywhere in Florida — checking how you're doing, refining your inhalers, and updating your action plan — with in-person care at our Port St. Lucie clinic when a lung exam, in-office testing, or evaluation of a flare is needed. We coordinate with a pulmonologist when your care calls for it.
What to expect from your care
Your first visit is an unhurried conversation about how you've been breathing, your history, and your triggers, followed by an exam and the right testing. Once we understand what's going on, we explain it clearly and agree on a plan together — your inhalers, your action plan, and any lifestyle or trigger changes. You leave knowing exactly how to use your medications and what to do if symptoms worsen.
From there, we set a follow-up rhythm that matches how stable your breathing is, recheck after any change, and keep refining until you're breathing comfortably and your flares are under control. This page is health education, not medical advice — the right plan depends on your individual health, so please book a visit so we can build it with you.
When to see a provider
See a provider if you have ongoing shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, or a cough that won't go away — or if you've already been diagnosed and your current plan isn't keeping symptoms under control. Regular follow-up is what keeps asthma and COPD stable and helps prevent the flares that land people in urgent care.
Call 911 or get emergency care for a severe breathing attack: severe shortness of breath, gasping, being unable to speak in full sentences, lips or fingertips turning blue or gray, a rescue inhaler that isn't working, or breathing trouble with chest pain, confusion, or extreme drowsiness. These are emergencies — do not wait.
Signs and symptoms to watch for
Symptoms vary from person to person, and some people have none at all. If any of these sound familiar, it's worth getting checked:
- Shortness of breath, especially with activity
- Wheezing or a whistling sound when breathing
- A cough that lingers, sometimes with mucus
- Chest tightness
- Symptoms triggered by allergens, smoke, cold air, or exercise (asthma)
- Frequent respiratory infections that linger
- Getting winded doing things that used to be easy (COPD)
